There’s one line that especially stuck with me after reading Dave Lowry’s books on the martial ways (budo) of Japan: More is expected of the budoka.
A budoka (follower of the martial ways) is always alert and notices what is going on around her. A budoka will do what is right — and also cope with the consequences. A budoka is disciplined. She will adjust her life to make time for training the budo and is still expected to excel in all other domains of her life. A budoka highly values tradition and the practical knowledge it comprises, but is also open for what science has to offer.
Following the budo awards the practitioner with focus, discipline & calmness. In turn, the budoka is expected to use these benefits inside and outside of the dojo.
